Overview of Hyperborea 2018
February has come and soon citizens and guests of the Karelian capital will again feel the Northern wind and holiday mood will return to the shores of the Onega Lake. International Winter Festival "Hyperborea-2018" will gather tens of thousands of participants who want to try all sorts of winter fun and see with their own eyes the glittering beauty of works from snow and ice!
First of all, there is some good news for travelers who decide to spend the first half of February in our northern region. In 2018 the territory of the festival "Hyperborea" for the first time will go beyond Petrozavodsk and cover the entire republic. Recreation centers and tourist complexes of Karelia can take part in a special competition of snow and ice figures "Karelian Winter Fairytale". Their teams, consisting of employees and guests, can create a figure of snow or ice and try their luck in one of the contest nominations. The winners will be awarded during the closing ceremony of the festival on February 17.
Traditionally, festival events are conducted for the month, but the main festive week will be on February 13-17. At this particular time sculptors from eleven regions of Russia as well as Finland, Belarus and Uzbekistan will present their masterpieces.
The main decoration of the festival is annual competition of snow and ice sculptures. The year 2018 will not be an exception: in a short time 31 remarkable sculptures made of snow and ice will appear on the Onega Lake embankment.
For the second year artificial snow is used for works, because of its purity, firmness and suitability for fine treatment. Last year experienced masters expressed high opinion about work conditions.
The main events of the festival will be held on February 17. Many novelties and unusual solutions are introduced this year. Museum festival "Old city. Winter" will be organized during the main Hyperborean Day. "Illusions of the Old City" is a bright, elegant and incredibly fascinating event that takes place in the historical district every summer on the City Day. It has become a visiting card of the Karelian capital. This time the Kizhi Museum will reconstruct atmosphere of outdoor festivities at Shrovetide in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Another famous urban event known as fish festival "Kalakunda" will be organized as a winter version. Try hot Finnish soup "Lohikeitto", visit fish shops and take part in the entertainment program! Tea festival "TeaFest" will be located nearby.
Among other interesting innovations is a creative contest of art objects "Music of Wind". The ancient Chinese traditions inspired organizers, in particular, the legend about the most popular and recognizable mascots of Feng Shui - Chinese Bells or "Wind Mills". The Northern Wind Boreas is cold and harsh, but loves beauty. Therefore, we decided to help him to perform his melody for the participants of the winter holiday!
Anyone wishing to collect their own mascots from any materials, limited only to their own imagination!
The main contest’s requirement is that art objects must sound in the wind. When all the mascots are hanged at holiday’s territory, everyone will hear musical talent of Boreas!
By the way, for the first time in the Festival’s history the guard and lord of the legendary northern country will make a public appearance. The winter residence of the Northern wind will be located in the large tent. Its doors will be open to visitors only for a short time, so do not miss such a unique opportunity!
Certainly, traditional Hyperborean events will also take place: snowmen contest, ice-fishing competitions, concert program and fireworks. The bright and life-affirming carnival show will be held on February, 18 in the framework of the Shrovetide celebration.
